Olympic weightlifting: learning the snatch and clean and jerk

Olympic weightlifting takes a barbell from the floor to overhead through the snatch and clean and jerk. Learn what makes each lift different and where to start learning them.

What you train

The snatch takes the bar overhead in one continuous movement. The clean and jerk first brings it to the shoulders, then overhead. Timing, positions and moving quickly under the bar are technical skills.

How to get started

Find a weightlifting club or qualified coach. Begin with a technique stick or appropriately light bar. Learn the starting position, pull, receiving position and how to release a lift on a suitable platform.

One way to arrange your week

Place the sessions on days you can train regularly. Start with this schedule and check how well you recover before the next session. If you miss a day, continue with the next session in the sequence.

How to recognise progress

A good session can mean catching a light bar securely in the same place several times. Your coach can point out which part has improved and what to work on next. Rest between the short attempts so you can start each one with attention. Use LiftPal to keep weights, repetitions and supporting strength exercises together over the weeks.

The learning environment matters

You need clear space, suitable barbell equipment and a platform designed to allow a lift to be released. Learn how to leave a missed attempt before using heavy loads. That belongs in practical coaching. A general gym does not automatically provide those conditions. Squats and pulls can support preparation, but their numbers alone do not show how well you can snatch or clean and jerk.

Does it fit your life?

Make finding good coaching part of the plan. A reachable club with regular technique sessions makes starting easier. Ask about loan equipment and beginner groups so you can try the sport before buying specialist shoes or equipment.
