HYROX or CrossFit: race format and everyday training

Looking for a mix of strength and endurance? Compare HYROX and CrossFit, from everyday training to competition, and find out what starting either one involves.

The main difference

HYROX gives you a known race format: eight one-kilometre runs, each followed by a set station. Running preparation, station practice and transitions become specific training tasks. CrossFit uses changing combinations of strength, conditioning and gymnastic movements; a week’s content depends on the local programme.

If a HYROX race motivates you, first check how regular running and access to sleds and ergometers fit your week. If varied coached group sessions are the main attraction, try a scaled CrossFit introduction. A fast WOD time and a HYROX race time measure different tasks and cannot be compared directly.

What a session involves

The format includes SkiErg, sled work, rowing and wall balls. Loads and how work is shared depend on the division. Check the current event rules before entering.

The WOD, or workout of the day, is the session’s workout task. A skill or strength section may come first. “Scaled” means adjusting factors such as load, repetitions or exercise variation.

A practical way to choose

Does a specific race help you stay motivated, and do you enjoy running? HYROX may be a good direction. If you prefer varied group sessions and want to learn gymnastics and barbell movements too, try CrossFit. For either option, look at places you can reach regularly. A good nearby class is easier to use than a perfect programme across town.

How to combine them

Strength and technical sessions may overlap. Preparing for HYROX still requires dedicated running preparation. A varied CrossFit week does not automatically provide the running volume you need.
